For Whom the Sun Rises: An Author’s View
What could be more inspiring to a writer than to see the sun rise on a new day of opportunities!
Currently, I’m working on three very different books. One is another addition to the Will James Mystery Series (book #8), another is a guide on writing for my return to teaching later this year at U-CONN in Waterbury as part of their O.L.L.I. program, and the third is a comprehensive business book.
Over the years, I've adapted to writing just about anywhere—back tables in fast food joints, libraries surrounded by stacks of research books, and even the passenger seat of a car. I'm set if I have some scrap paper, a few sharp pencils, and a fully charged laptop. At home, I usually write in a very small bedroom, which I’ve managed to fit with two oversized desks. My wife Lora uses one, and the other is a custom-made half-moon-shaped beauty from my time in New Jersey. This room, thickly carpeted and on the side of the house facing the back, means I often miss the beautiful sunrises.
My home, situated on a mountain up a steep driveway from the road, offers a fantastic view. At night, I can see the lights of Hartford, and during the day, it feels like I can see forever. But it's the sunrises that are truly special.
It was just me and my daughter's two cats for a while. When the sunrise was particularly beautiful, I would pick up one of the cats, waking her from sleep. She always seemed to forgive me, and we watched the sunrise together. Those moments are cherished memories.
I've now relocated my laptop and book notes to the living room dining area, which has nearly floor-to-ceiling windows. This change allows me to see the sunrise again. Today was especially stunning, with indescribable pinks, oranges, and blues. This natural beauty is one reason I stay in this house, even though it's far too big for me now. Sunrises bring me hope, particularly while writing a book. I find them inspiring.
We live in challenging times, and I need all the inspiration I can get. Every era has had its difficulties, but these times feel particularly testing. There’s a notable lack of mutual respect today that troubles me. I've always believed that sometimes my guy might be wrong, and sometimes your guy might be right. It feels like we're living in a time of "my side is never wrong, and your side is never right." I yearn for more balanced perspectives, as the current state seems detrimental to our health and sanity.
Since the beginning of time, there have been ups and downs. But the constant has always been the sunrise, bringing hope and natural beauty.
It’s comforting to know that nothing and no one can change that. With a nod to George and Ira Gershwin and Fred Astaire, it’s comforting to know that they can’t take that away from me.
Write it Down!
I strongly believe that everyone has a story to tell, and a place to write can be anywhere that inspires your creativity.
Some writers require solitude and silence, while others find a noisy cafe their best place. Wherever you find to write, get your story down!
If you find you are having difficulty pulling it all together, I offer my help.
